1. Mileage: Most people put about 10,000 to 15,000 miles on their vehicles for year. Keep this in mind and consider how much or how little the vehicle has already been driven.
2. Year: It might be worth it to look for one model year newer in a vehicle you like if it means you get the newest looking model or a newer feature.
3. Trade-In Value: While you probably won’t be trading in your purchase anytime soon, it’s worth considering how well that make and model depreciates.
4. History: Any used car is going to have some history but it’s the kind of history that’s important. Normal wear and tear will lead to some repairs but if a vehicle has repeatedly had major mechanical issues, that’s something to watch out for.
5. Test Drive It: Pay close attention during your test drive. How does the car feel to drive? Does it make any strange noises, are the brakes responsive and smooth?
6. Does it Leak? Assuming the pavement is dry, take a look under the vehicle. Do you see any fluids? Water could just be condensation but other fluids could be a sign of a problem.
7. Do Your Research: There are many resources online to find reviews. Also, ask around. Friends and family can be a great resource if they’ve driven the make and model you’re looking at. Plus, you can usually have a mechanic look at the vehicle you’re interested in too.
8. Is the vehicle Certified Pre-Owned? This is a special distinction to look for in a used car. To be “Certified” vehicles must meet a long list of qualifications from model year and mirage to having a full vehicle history report and passing a rigorous inspections and reconditioning process as well as extended warranties.
9. Look out for rust. Any used car will have some wear and tear but rust can be a sign of deeper damage. Plus, it’s something that will only get worse unless it’s addressed.
10. How does the car look? You want to be proud of your vehicle and you’ll also want to sell it again someday. Be sure you can live with any cosmetic flaws you find.
